Infographic: The Custom Web Design Process

True marketing success is based on a customized plan. To develop actionable steps and achieve stated goals, we will provide a time-based plan from first conversation to website launch. Each component of the plan will be scheduled with deliverables based on due dates. The plan will include creative material, site layout, system programming, written content and financial budget.

By beginning with a plan of action, based on stated goals, we maintain great communication with clients. The result is a website our clients are proud to share that delivers desired results. Our typical custom designed website goes from conversation and initial concepts to launch in 30 days or less.

Step 1: Have a Conversation (Day 1)

If local to New Jersey or Greater Philadelphia, we’d love to chat over a cup of Joe. We also have many clients across the United States. While we do not meet with all in person, we use tools like Slack and GoToMeeting to connect, show off our pearly whites, and establish goals for your web design project and overall marketing plan.

Step 2: Estimate (Day 2-4)

We like to begin with an end in mind, launching a great website and overall marketing plan. Following our conversation, we’ll put together a detailed project estimate with specific deliverables and terms. This will show you exactly what it will take, including time and resources to achieve our unified goals.

Step 3: Benchmark (Day 5-8)

Working with our unified goals and marketing plan, we will share website layouts and digital marketing concepts to create a custom guideline for your business and web design project.

Step 4: Design (Day 9-15)

We’ll start to sketch out our ideas & customize a mockup web design. Need a logo and branding? We can design that too. By providing a few different ideas, we eliminate common design setbacks, keeping us on track to obtain our goals.

Step 5: Present (Day 16-18)

We’ll provide the final mockup for your approval and schedule a time to share our concepts and collect your feedback. At this stage, we will also complete a “look-back” and provide you an interim report. This will show you where we’ve allocated our time, and where we are with our initial budget.

Step 6: Develop & Test (Day 19-29)

On our test servers, we’ll code the front and backend of your website, setting up specialized content management areas unique to your business. We’ll make final edits to content and perform usability, browser, and device testing to make sure your new website looks great and works on all devices.

Step 7: Launch (Day 30)

Once approved and tested, we’ll migrate the final files from our server to your server. We’ll again conduct quality assurance testing to make sure all is working properly.

Step 8: Graduate

We make sure you are independent and set up a training session to show you how to update your new website using your content management system (CMS). We then discuss additional opportunities to work together post-development on search engine optimization, search engine marketing, and social to drive traffic to your site and generate sales.

Note: A Custom Web Design Isn’t For Everyone

There are a lot of different ways to build a website. In many cases, a custom web design can be overkill. On the flip slide, it could be the only way to achieve a certain look or functionality.

Today, many content management systems (CMS), like WordPress for example, have both free and premium themes available. Often times, these frameworks can provide enough functionality to build a website, especially a simple design for a business “just getting started.” If you’re on a tight budget, or not looking for overly complex features, this would be the way to go.

When a custom web design is not needed, the timeline is shortened. Instead of 30 days, total project duration ranges between 7-10 days. This is because the mockup, revision and front-end development stages are typically bypassed.

While the paths of a custom web design and customized web design are slightly different, our initial web design process does not change: We will schedule a conversation to establish goals for your web design project and overall marketing plan. Then, we will put together a detailed project estimate with specific deliverables and terms.
