How Digital Transformation is Changing Marketing: Lessons from 3 Months in the Field

What comes to mind when you hear “digital transformation”? For me, I thought it was simply a means of using technology to make your life easier. Since working at Orpical, my idea of that term has completely changed.

I come from a marketing background; I got my degree in marketing and minored in digital media. Before joining Orpical, I worked at agencies where I worked in digital marketing, specifically content marketing and strategy.

As a content marketer, I was primarily interested in how AI could enhance my work, improve my content, and increase my efficiency. Little did I know that AI’s potential extends far beyond just my role and industry—it can revolutionize almost any job.

I was excited to begin my journey at Orpical, eager for the fresh start and the wealth of learning opportunities it presented within the realm of AI and tech marketing.

This career pivot was largely imparted upon me by a woman in the field whom I look up to greatly. She told me one of the best pieces of advice I’ve ever gotten from a mentor: make sure your skills and expertise are always valuable to the job market. Yes, passion is great and necessary – but what does the job market demand?

It’s crucial to understand the current demands of the job market and anticipate its future trends.

For a marketer, adapting to the market is one of the most important things to know and embrace to be successful. My first three months revealed the importance of embracing change rather than resisting it. Innovation demands this of us.

We’ve seen this before—writers and journalists transitioned to the digital age, and radio hosts evolved into podcasters. It’s a tale as old as time: as technology evolves, so must we. Those who resist change and ignore new tools risk becoming obsolete. Innovation isn’t a threat; it’s an opportunity, and embracing it is key to thriving in the new era.

So, how do you not fall behind, then? The answer to that question lies in one pivotal concept: digital transformation.

More to Digital Transformation Than Meets the Eye

Digital transformation is the integration of digital technology into all areas of a business, fundamentally changing how you operate and deliver value to customers. This integration can essentially streamline just about anything.

Everybody wants to make their life easier, especially where work is concerned. I’ve always been intrigued by how digital transformation can be specifically applied to enhance marketing and streamline my daily responsibilities and functions.

Many university programs don’t adequately teach students how to effectively integrate and utilize AI. A study conducted on higher education faculty revealed that only 18% of instructors understood the teaching applications of generative AI, and only 14% of them reported feeling confident in their ability to incorporate AI in their teaching.

Similarly, many established companies, whether outsourcing marketing or managing it in-house, still struggle to fully incorporate AI into their strategies and operations. In fact, 50% of marketers believe inadequate AI adoption is holding them back from achieving their goals.

In my first three months, I witnessed firsthand how AI could revolutionize every aspect of our marketing—from operations to strategy and content development, to getting the final product and analyzing the impact. AI enhanced every core marketing function, and I was at the wheel, driving and steering the ship.

My understanding of digital transformation has expanded in so many ways since joining the team at Orpical. What I once believed were the best uses of AI, barely even scratched the surface of its potential applications.

AI is taking over search engines, generating mind-blowing outputs through advanced prompting, assisting in product development and refinement, and powering automation software that helps companies maximize efficiency and decrease costs.

These are just a few of the incredible ways AI can be leveraged that I have experienced in my first few months, fundamentally changing my approach to work.

The Power and Versatility of AI

You can pretty much incorporate AI into almost anything. However, I’m not saying that AI replaces human expertise; rather, it simply complements it.

For instance, when I ask AI to generate blog topic ideas for a client based solely on their industry, the AI might produce a long list of generic topics with little value. However, because I know the client—their goals, pain points, audience, customer persona, keywords, and business objectives—I can guide the AI with criteria that ensure the topics have a high impact score tailored to their needs.

By combining my deep understanding of the client with AI’s capabilities, I inform the AI of what’s most important, something it can’t discern on its own. This collaboration allows us to create a product that neither AI nor human effort could achieve alone.

The real power lies in the synergy between human intelligence and artificial intelligence. When I say this, I mean that when leveraged strategically, AI becomes a force multiplier, enabling humans to enhance their capabilities and achieve outcomes that were previously unattainable.

Unexpected Applications of AI

As I mentioned before, my primary interest as a content marketer was in exploring how AI could enhance my work, improve my content, and increase my efficiency. During my first few months, I not only achieved these goals but also discovered additional benefits. Below are examples of how I leveraged AI to enhance my skills and increase my value as a marketer:

Brainstorming and Ideation

At Orpical, we’ve utilized AI to generate content ideas on a macro scale, enhancing SEO and assigning impact scores based on what’s most important to our clients. The higher the impact score, the better the topic aligns with their needs.

We now have the ability to generate content ideas with advanced SEO, assess impact based on client values, and determine the most effective topics for thought leadership and lead generation in minutes. That’s right–minutes! Our content ideation process is game-changing, made possible only through the advancements of AI.

Assisting in Content and Product Development

In content creation, we’ve harnessed advanced AI prompting to develop brandable concepts and strategies that elevate our client’s businesses and credibility within their industries. AI provides real-time data and market insights, which we integrate into our content strategies and deliverables.

By leveraging AI’s extensive data, we create products that incorporate these insights, giving our clients a competitive edge. This approach has accelerated our product development timeline, reducing what used to take months to just a week.

Standardizing Processes for Quality Assurance and Scalability

Our marketing operations have undergone a dramatic transformation. AI is currently helping me to build and implement a scalable, quality-focused content development process. With this streamlined process, I’m able to produce larger amounts of quality work. Our process guides us through every stage of content creation:

  1. Idea Generation: Using our AI model, we have the AI leverage advanced SEO and impact scales to provide us with content topics best suited to our client’s needs.
  2. Outline Creation: AI handles the heavy lifting, creating an outline that adheres to our specific guidelines and qualifications.
  3. Contextual Drafting: Using our model, we guide the AI to take into account our client’s products and services while drafting a basis that provides ample context on their business.

AI is making it possible for us to maintain seamless execution of the entire content creation process. By leveraging AI in this way, we’ve dramatically improved our efficiency and output quality.

Incorporating AI into my daily work has helped me enhance our client deliverables, improve content quality through data-driven insights, and increase my efficiency tenfold. With AI as my trusted assistant, I can focus on the bigger picture – which is delivering maximum value to our internal marketing initiatives and our clients.

We All Need To Learn How to Embrace AI

Here’s the takeaway, and probably the most important thing I’ve learned in my first three months at a digital transformation agency: learn to embrace AI.

We can’t shy away from what’s already happening, the best solution is to lean in and embrace its potential. We are living in an era of unprecedented access to tools that can expedite learning and development like never before.

The key is in the concept of co-intelligence: how we can combine human experience and creativity with advanced technology.

While AI cannot replicate the nuanced understanding and emotional intelligence that humans bring to the table, it can significantly streamline our work processes and enhance our productivity. AI won’t replace the human touch, but it can make our lives exponentially easier, allowing us to focus on tasks that truly require our unique human capabilities.

Integrating Co-Intelligence Into Our Lives

The synergy between human capabilities and AI represents a powerful new opportunity in our technological advancement.

Unlike AI, humans possess soft skills that provide a competitive edge over machines. Human experience and creativity offer unique qualities that AI cannot replicate.

On the other hand, AI excels at processing vast amounts of data, identifying patterns, and performing repetitive tasks with unmatched speed and accuracy. When we combine these computational resources with human insight, we create a synergy that is greater than the sum of its parts.

The key lies in striking the right balance. This partnership between human and machine intelligence opens up exciting possibilities for innovation, efficiency, and problem-solving across all sectors of society.

My First Three Months in a Word: Mind-Blown

My passion lies in marketing, particularly in bridging the gap between impactful content and business objectives to propel a brand forward. When effective content and business strategy are aligned, it leads to remarkable success, increased revenue, and a lasting impact on the industry.

My first couple of months at Orpical have shown me just how transformative AI can be in doing exactly this.

We are living in an exciting time for innovation. The world is moving to a place where marketing and tech are more intertwined than ever. While how we market products and services might change, the end outcome of marketing will not.

With the help of AI and technology, the ability to go to market is vastly accelerated – facilitating in useful experimentation and more personalized and impactful interactions. These facets combined have the power to generate great results and a lasting impact.

These past few months, I discovered the future of the marketing industry and the untapped potential of digital transformation that still lies there.

As a content marketer, my primary goal is to create content that effectively delivers the message and meets the objectives—generating leads, building brand awareness, closing the sale–whatever the goal may be. When I was first asked to write this article, my initial draft was very objective. After reviewing it, our Co-Founder, Stefan, encouraged me to let my voice shine through. His exact words were, “Put the Melissa stamp on this.”

This leaves us with an important lesson: in a world where AI can generate almost anything, our unique perspectives and personalities are what make us truly valuable.

I was initially hesitant to let my voice take center stage, but with the encouragement to do so, I embraced it. With AI having the capabilities to generate work and create content, my human touch on this piece is what makes it truly special.

Impactful marketing tells a story, human perspective gives that story life, and storytelling remains at the core of any business.

In this new era, authenticity is everything, which is why we need co-intelligence.

In closing, I encourage you to consider this: AI doesn’t mean the end for us as humans; it marks an exciting new beginning.
